ABI Research just published its most recent version of the 5G Mobile Device Vendor Market Shares (released in 1Q 2024) market data product, which reveals worldwide smartphone market shares and sales volumes through 3Q 2023. Like last year’s vendor shares, Apple and Samsung dominate the market as the largest phone manufacturers.
Biggest Takeaways:
- Worldwide smartphone shipments grew 0.4% Year-over-Year (YoY) between 3Q 2022 and 3Q 2023. This sales growth succeeds eight consecutive quarters of sales decline, dating back to 3Q 2021.
- In 3Q, 299.87 million smartphones were shipped worldwide, bringing the yearly total to 841.23 million units sold.
- Samsung held the largest smartphone vendor market share in 3Q 2023 (19.7%), spurred by new flagship device releases such as the Galaxy S23 series, Galaxy Z Fold 5, and Galaxy Z Flip 5.
- Apple’s iPhone 14 helped the tech giant hold the second-largest smartphone market share (16.9%), with the iPhone 14 Pro Max being the top-selling smartphone globally in 2023.
- Xiaomi (13.9%) trailed Apple in market share after releasing the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12T Pro, Xiaomi Redmi 12 5G, Xiaomi 13 Ultra, and others last year.
- A notable development in our most recent data is the emergence of Chinese phone manufacturer Transsion, rounding out the top five market shares (8.8%). The company is the world's fastest-growing smartphone manufacturer and holds a strong presence in Africa. Transsion’s ascendance in the smartphone market knocks another Chinese manufacturer, vivo, out of the top five vendor shares worldwide.
