Apple Finally Enters Foldables, 7 Years After Its First Market Introduction

Why should it matter, and what are the key battlegrounds of foldables today?

The year 2026 has been the one for foldables. Tension exists in the market as foldable vendors like Samsung, Huawei, HONOR, and Motorola have raced to carve a piece of the ultra-premium pie through innovation, pricing parity, and expanding form factors. The segment’s two leaders, Samsung and Huawei, have made their move over the past couple of weeks, largely in anticipation of swirling rumors about Apple’s long-awaited entry into the foldable space, as they try to defend their market share in a growing and uncomfortably crowded segment.

Huawei continues to build and own the tri-fold smartphone category, launching its second iteration, the Huawei Mate XT 2, a couple of days ago (September 7, 2026). Its improved wing-style tri-fold design follows the Samsung Galaxy Tri-Fold’s similar experimental approach, moving away from the Mate XT's zigzag Z-shaped design. Huawei’s Mate XT 2 tri-fold model is currently the market’s most premium-priced product, announced at RMB19,999 (US$2800).

Samsung, meanwhile, launched its 2026 slate of Galaxy Foldables at its Unpacked event 2 months ago (July 22, 2026). Apart from new model updates to its two existing lines, the Galaxy Fold 8 and the Z Flip 8, the smartphone giant strategically split its book-style line into two—adding the Z Fold 8 as a wider and shorter form factor compared to the traditional tall and narrow design.

The rest of the field is also starting to become crowded. Chinese Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) like Xiaomi, HONOR, and vivo have launched their foldable models, expecting to provide stiff competition both in their domestic market and on the global stage. American-based Motorola has also launched both book-style and flip-style foldables since 2025, focusing on carving out market share through price parity with competitors.

Finally, Apple, the smartphone giant, has been silent for the last 7 years, and its silence has become the gravitational center of the foldables space. Newly appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) John Ternus debuted the iPhone Duo’s launch specs, pointing to the company’s priority target for its maiden foldable: a 7.6-inch inner display, a 5.4-inch cover, a 1:1.4 unfolded aspect ratio, A20 Pro-class silicon, with about 12 GB RAM, and Touch ID rather than Face ID. It is priced at US$1,999. This shorter, book-style form factor isn't a coincidence, as it reflects a convergence of similar hardware design philosophies and market research into consumer sentiment.

Apple’s widely anticipated launch narrowed down the key converging battlegrounds that will directly challenge the iPhone Duo’s adoption in the foldables market.

Hardware and Form Factor

Apple’s entry validates the convergence of book-style foldable form factors to a 1:1.4, 7.6-inch inner panel screen. It will not be the first foldable in this space, however, as market leaders Samsung (Galaxy Z Fold8) and Huawei (Pura X Max) have already launched or showcased their physical products since June 2026. This level of hardware commoditization is likely a deliberate attempt to challenge Apple as a specification differentiator and shift launch-day marketing focus away from expected hardware wins like crease and hinge quality.

Ecosystem Lock-in and Continuity

However, differentiation will shift toward ecosystem and software lock-in, a battleground where Apple is traditionally strong. The 1:1.4 aspect ratio is a major win for Apple, as Handoff and Stage Manager on iPad already benefit from a decade-old trend of tablet-optimized iOS apps. Competitive software like Samsung's DeX is expected to challenge Apple, but it already faces an uphill battle as Apple compounds across the world's largest premium installed base.

Pricing Parity

The year 2026 has already proved a tumultuous one for smartphones. As relief from the memory crisis draws more delays than previously expected, component prices have already pushed smartphone Average Selling Prices (ASPs) beyond standard inflation. With the iPhone Duo entering at nearly the peak of dual-foldable prices at US$1,999, the launch looks very different against a market where the entire pricing floor has been pulled out from under it. Even with aggressive pricing, Apple is expected to leverage its iPhone Pro Max customers’ purchasing power, as the market has shown that Apple’s customers are increasingly gravitating toward the high-end premium flagship model it markets, not away from it.

Regional Battleground

Apple’s global stage is expected to challenge Huawei and Samsung across all markets. In China, the global leader in smartphone shipments in 2025, Apple and Huawei are the two dominant leaders in the market. Even as Huawei holds a strong position in foldable shipments in China, coupled with its novelty tri-fold and its timed XT 2 launch to overshadow Apple on its home turf, Apple is still expected to carve out a decent share of the market as it competes with the other popular foldable products from Huawei, vivo, HONOR, and OPPO. Elsewhere on its own home turf, Apple is expected to make major waves in North America, as it seeks to challenge Samsung’s stronghold in the region and potentially pull away from Motorola's market share in the next year.
