In the overall small cell equipment market, ABI Research estimates that in 2013 Alcatel-Lucent ranked first in market share followed by Airvana, Cisco, and ip.access. Among the semiconductor baseband SoC suppliers Broadcom finished in first followed by Intel, Texas Instruments, and Freescale.

“The year 2013 saw two significant acquisitions in the small cell ecosystem with Cisco acquiring leading equipment vendor Ubiquisys and Intel acquiring the wireless communications semiconductor business of Mindspeed, signalling the entry of two well-funded and dominant players into the small cells market,” says Nick Marshall, research director.

“ABI Research’s market share estimate by protocol has Alcatel-Lucent leading in 3G and Contela leading in 4G while among the semiconductor vendors Broadcom leads in 3G and Cavium leads in 4G,” continues Marshall.

ABI Research also publishes a high-level semiconductor design-in cross reference, discusses the industry baseband SoC roadmap and major trends, profiles 11 equipment vendors and 9 semiconductor vendors and compare SoC solutions. The equipment vendors profiled include: Airvana, Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, Contela, Ericsson, Huawei, ip.access, NEC, Nokia, Samsung and SpiderCloud. The semiconductor vendors profiled include: Ablaze, Broadcom, Cavium, Coherent Logix, Freescale, Intel, Octasic, Qualcomm, and Texas Instruments.

Part of ABI Research’s Small Cells and Enterprise and Consumer Femtocells Research Services, these results are published in two companion reports: “Small Cell Access Points and Semiconductors: Market Shares” in which we estimate market shares by protocol and by small cell class and compare semiconductor SoC portfolios and “Small Cell Hardware Ecosystem” in which we profile the companies in the ecosystem and discuss a small cell industry roadmap and outlook.
