NXP, Infineon, and STMicroelectronics round up the top three positions awarded in ABI Research’s latest Transportation and Ticketing IC Competitive Assessment.NXP topped the Innovation criteria in a closely fought battle with Infineon, which finished just 1.3 points behind. NXP and Infineon’s high Innovation scores were driven by innovative product portfolios with strong support for NFC, experience in multi-application enablement, and additional feature developments including Very High Bit-rate (VHBR) and security mechanisms in their PUF and Integrity Guard platforms respectively.STMicroelectronics’ third placed Innovation ranking was awarded for its strong base of security certifications and its leading position within the SWP SIM market.
Additionally, NXP, Infineon, and STMicroelectronics impressed on the Implementation front, and were awarded first, second, and third position respectively. NXP is the standout market leader, currently deploying ticketing ICs used within 736 cities across 70 countries. NXP continues to develop and update its variety of MIFARE protocols to ensure MIFARE remains in keeping with the latest security and functional requirements, while providing a migration path from lower to higher end applications.Infineon’s second placed market share ranking and broad product portfolio drove it to second place in the Implementation ranking. Infineon is making efforts to improve upon its market influence through its founding of the OSPT Alliance and subsequent CIPURSE protocol. STMicroelectronics rounds off the top three Implementation rankings with success in European Calypso deployments.
Senior Analyst Phil Sealy commented, “IC vendors need to stay ahead of the innovation curve and provide not only IC solutions to serve existing legacy projects, but future proof technologies with improved and extended functionalities to meet the needs of next generation contactless ticketing solutions. Investment into contactless ticketing systems is capital hungry, and transportation networks are increasingly being squeezed as governments reduce and pull back subsidies. Technology is not only an important role for ticketing authentication, but an enabler of new revenue generation and opportunity for transportation authorities to reduce reliance upon government subsidies.”
The Transportation and Ticketing IC Competitive Assessment provides a rating of the leading IC vendors active within the contactless ticketing market. A total of four companies were scrutinized against 10 different criteria all under the categories of Implementation and Innovation. These findings are part of ABI Research’s Secure ICs & Embedded Security Market Research.
