In descending order, Gemalto, Giesecke & Devrient, and Oberthur Technologies were awarded the overall top three positions within ABI Research’s Transportation & Ticketing Card Competitive Assessment. Gemalto topped the Innovation criteria through its strong and continued NFC focus, providing a variety of hardware solutions with pre-load protocol options as well as a TSM platform already heavily subscribed to worldwide. Oberthur Technologies’ second placed Innovation ranking was driven by its standalone and embedded secure element support through its dragonfly and PEARL brands, the latter of which is CIPURSE certified. Giesecke & Devrient completes the top three innovators. It has stayed ahead of the innovation curve; currently deploying a CIPURSE certified multi-application credential within Brazil.

The overall Implementation winners were ASK, Gemalto, and Giesecke & Devrient; awarded first, second, and third position respectively. These are the leading three contactless ticketing vendors, occupying the top three market share positions, all of which have broad product portfolios with multi-protocol support in a variety of form-factors.

Senior Analyst Phil Sealy comments, “The contactless ticketing landscape is very much shifting towards the enablement of next-generation functionality. Long gone are the days where a simple pre-loaded application was the only requirement. Multi-application, NFC, and added value service functionality and enablement will become more common-placed as transportation networks increasingly look towards smart ticketing technologies as an enabler to access new revenue streams and business opportunities. Gemalto, Giesecke & Devrient, and Oberthur Technologies are all well positioned, and already have the strategies and product lines in place to cope and provide innovative solutions in keeping with future functional demands.”

The Transportation and Ticketing Card Competitive Assessment provides a rating of the leading smart card vendors active within the contactless ticketing market. A total of nine companies were scrutinized against 10 different criteria all under the categories of Implementation and Innovation. These findings are part of ABI Research’s Transportation and Access Control Technologies Market Research.
