WiGig Market Opportunities and Challenges Update

In this report, ABI Research explains the evolution of Wi-Fi, market trends, and recommendations for future application of the technology.  802.11ad or WiGig, in contrast to conventional 802.11 technologies, is an extension to the Wi-Fi standard, operating in the 60 GHz millimeter wave unlicensed band, and its primary focus is to offer much higher throughput than existing Wi-Fi core technologies to drive new use cases and improve the user experience. Also on the horizon is 802.11ay, the next-generation evolution of 60 GHz and the WiGig standard. This report provides an updated perspective on the outlook for 60 GHz Wi-Fi technologies, seeks to understand where WiGig will be able to carve out success, provides an overview of key chipset suppliers and 60 GHz strategies, explores why 60 GHz has had limited success to date, and suggests how it can overcome technical and market obstacles to propel it forward over the next decade.
