NXP and Gemalto Awarded First Place Rankings Within ABI Research’s Transportation and Ticketing IC and Smart Card Vendor Matrices

Oyster Bay, New York - 14 Mar 2013

NXP and Gemalto are the highest ranked smart card and IC vendors within ABI Research’s latest transportation and ticketing smart cards and ICs Competitive Assessment. The assessment consists of full year 2011 and first half 2012 market shares and two vendor matrices, one for secure ICs and the other smart card vendors.

Additionally, NXP ranked in first position in all the market share segments, including memory, microcontroller, and disposable IC ticketing solutions. Overall NXP achieved a total market share in excess of 80% for the first half of 2012 (a combination of memory, microcontroller, and disposable ticketing solutions).

Gemalto was awarded first position within the smart card transportation and ticketing vendor matrix. Although not the market leader in terms of market share, a combination of its current global reach and penetration, innovative multi-application products, and NFC support ensured a high score and subsequent 1st place ranking.

“NXP continues to dominate the contactless ticketing market,” comments research analyst, Phil Sealy. “Despite its significant share and presence, NXP has continued to build upon its broad portfolio appealing to new markets. Continued evolution of products will be ever more important to NXP’s future success. Other vendors see the potential from this still growing market and want a piece of the pie and so competition will continue to increase. The IC ticketing market is going to become more crowded over the next two to three years making continued product evolution an important focal point to remain at the cutting edge of the latest trends in adoption.”

This Competitive Assessment provides a rating of the leading transportation and ticketing card IC and smart card vendors. A total of 13 companies were scrutinized against 7 different criteria all under the categories of Implementation and Innovation. These findings are part of ABI Research’s Transportation Ticketing Technologies Research Service.
