Software-Defined Automation: Industrial Automation Security and Code Management Capabilities Will Matter Most to Manufacturers in the Short Run

By James Prestwood | 24 Feb 2025 | IN-7725

Software-Defined Automation (SDA) is still in the early stages of development and adoption in the industrial automation market. Many manufacturers are still hesitant to adopt and are likely to continue to favor legacy automation architecture and physical controllers. If technology vendors want to see the greatest success in convincing manufacturers to deploy their solutions, focusing on industrial automation security and reusability of code & code management capabilities as primary selling points for SDA will be more effective than focusing on Artificial Intelligence (AI)/Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) tools, virtual controllers, and hardware independence.
