NEWSBMW Takes Third-Party Promotion into the Vehicle |
Some BMW owners were greeted by an unexpected addition to their center displays this August: Spider-Man. As part of its partnership with Sony Pictures for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, BMW expanded its Festive App beyond the seasonal animations traditionally delivered through the feature to include third-party promotional content. A banner appeared on the central display at startup, inviting drivers to launch a roughly 19-second animation that combined the display with audio and ambient lighting while the vehicle was stationary. The campaign was available on vehicles equipped with BMW Operating Systems 7 through X and formed part of BMW’s wider partnership with Sony Pictures, which also includes BMW vehicle placement in the film. BMW characterized the campaign as an optional branded experience rather than advertising, and no direct payment for the cockpit placement has been disclosed.
Previous uses of the Festive App centered on BMW’s own seasonal animations; the Spider-Man campaign extends that infrastructure to third-party promotional content. Existing Over-the-Air (OTA) capabilities can therefore support post-sale commercial engagement without requiring a new platform or vehicle feature, while the reaction from some BMW owners raises a separate question around how that access should be used.

OTA connectivity gives automakers greater control over the digital cockpit after a vehicle is sold, creating opportunities to introduce new services, content, and commercial experiences throughout the ownership period. Customers, however, still experience the display as part of a product they purchased and expect some control over what appears there. That tension becomes more significant when Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) messaging expands beyond vehicle functions and connected services to third-party promotions. BMW’s campaign is limited in scope, but it exposes how the same connectivity used to improve the vehicle after sale can, without clear boundaries, also turn the center display into a recurring surface for promotional content.
BMW has previously acknowledged the sensitivity around that access. In 2023, the Senior Vice President for Connected Company Development, Stephan Durach, described the vehicle as the customer’s “last private space” and rejected the idea of selling cockpit screen space for commercials. It is important to note that the Spider-Man collaboration does not directly contradict that position: BMW has not disclosed selling advertising space to Sony Pictures, and the animation required the user to launch it. That distinction, however, may matter less to customers who experience the unsolicited banner as advertising regardless of how the partnership is structured. BMW faced similar criticism in 2023 over subscriptions for heated seats already installed in customer vehicles. Then-Board Member for Customer, Brands and Sales, Pieter Nota, acknowledged that, although customers were not technically paying twice for the feature, “perception is reality,” and BMW ultimately discontinued the subscription.
BMW is also not alone in experimenting with the cockpit as a post-sale communication channel. Stellantis has used infotainment displays for promotional messaging, while Mercedes-Benz has faced similar questions over event-related cockpit graphics that the company explicitly distinguished from advertising. These examples remain too limited to suggest that cockpit advertising is developing into a major automotive revenue model, but they show how quickly the distinction between digital service and commercial messaging can become blurred. History offers a useful precedent: Apple’s unsolicited distribution of U2’s Songs of Innocence in 2014 generated enough backlash that the company released a dedicated removal tool only days later. The lesson was not that free content is inherently unwelcome, but that promotional material can feel intrusive when users believe they had no role in deciding whether it belonged in their digital environment.
The issue also extends beyond consumer preference as cockpit interfaces face greater scrutiny around visual demand and driver attention. BMW restricted the Spider-Man animation to stationary vehicles, and the campaign itself should not be treated as a driver-distraction violation. However, OEMs are gaining more freedom to alter driver-facing displays after production, while regulators and safety organizations are simultaneously placing greater emphasis on disciplined Human-Machine Interface (HMI) design. Commercial content adds another consideration to cockpit governance, requiring manufacturers to determine not only what can technically be delivered through OTA software, but what belongs on the display and under what conditions.

Automakers should establish clear rules for unsolicited commercial content before its presence in the cockpit becomes normalized. OTA access enables manufacturers to improve and expand vehicle functionality throughout the ownership period, and customers should continue to experience that access as a benefit. Using the same connection to introduce unsolicited third-party content risks doing the opposite, particularly for premium brands whose customers expect a high degree of control over the environment they purchased.
For automakers:
- Give customers control over non-vehicle content. Third-party material should be easy to dismiss, limited to appropriate vehicle states, and supported by a persistent opt-out. Premium manufacturers should be particularly cautious about introducing third-party content into an environment marketed around personalization and refinement.
- Establish clear governance for what reaches the cockpit. Commercial content should appear through channels visually distinct from safety alerts, vehicle-status information, navigation prompts, and service notifications, with higher-priority vehicle information always taking precedence. HMI, safety, software, privacy, legal, and marketing teams should jointly define what can reach driver-facing displays and under what conditions throughout the vehicle lifecycle.
For cockpit software and platform providers:
- Build customer controls into content-delivery platforms. Vehicle-state restrictions, notification hierarchies, consent management, frequency limits, and opt-out functionality should be incorporated into the infrastructure used to manage post-sale content.
- Support commercial use cases without compromising the core interface. The value of connected cockpit platforms will depend partly on enabling new services and engagement while preserving a predictable, uncluttered experience for the vehicle owner.
The digital cockpit offers OEMs a valuable post-sale connection to customers, but that connection comes with responsibility. Connected vehicles can continue changing long after they leave the dealership, making customer control and brand perception increasingly important to what those changes should include. Manufacturers that set clear expectations early can pursue new digital services and commercial opportunities without making customers feel that greater connectivity has come at the expense of ownership.
