IBM Nanostack Signals the Next Phase of AI Silicon Scaling

By Christine Carvajal | 13 Aug 2026 | IN-8236

IBM's Nanostack shows that the next phase of Artificial Intelligence (AI) silicon scaling is shifting away from smaller process nodes and toward combining vertical transistor architecture with memory hierarchy, power delivery, and packaging. Whether it becomes commercially relevant will depend less on its disclosed density figures than on IBM landing a named manufacturing partner and making the architecture portable enough for an ecosystem to build around it.
