A 5G Network Improves Productivity at Worcester Bosch but More Work Required to Encourage Others to Follow

Worcester Bosch produces more than 1,000 boilers each day. The company is a test bed for Industry 4.0 technologies, and 12 months ago the factory became the first in the United Kingdom to deploy a 5G wireless network. The company utilizes over 400 machines and employs 1,200 people.

The significance of the facility’s 5G network is not only that it’s a U.K. first, but also that the network has been deployed by the Worcestershire 5G Consortium. The consortium’s members include the Worcestershire Local Enterprise Partnership, the 5G Innovation Centre at the University of Surrey, AWTG, Huawei, O2, BT, the University of Worcestershire, Worcestershire Local Enterprise Partnership, and Worcestershire County Council.

Many of the above organizations were present at the recent meeting of the 5G Alliance for Connected Industries and Automation (5G-ACIA), which held its January conference in Coventry, England. The event was a good opportunity to hear the perspectives of government bodies such as the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sports (DCMS); the telecom regulator Ofcom; public agencies like West Midlands 5G Network and Digital Catapult; network providers; and technology suppliers such as Bosch, Siemens, and Fujitsu.

The 5G network at Bosch encapsulates the potential of 5G networks in a factory and the 5G-ACIA conference highlighted the reasons why other manufacturers have yet to invest.

The Microwave Electron Tube Market Once Again at Over US$1 Billion

While microwave and millimeter wave high-power vacuum electron devices (VEDs) remain “below the radar” of many industry observers, the total available market (TAM) for this segment is once again over US$1 billion, as it has been for the last several years, according to a new market data report from ABI Research.

“Despite its size, and although these tubes remain essential elements in specialized military, scientific/medical, and space communications applications, this market is generally under-reported by the electronics industry at large and poorly understood by those not directly involved in it,” explains Lance Wilson, Research Director.

Over 225 Million eSIM Enabled Smartphones to be Delivered in 2020, Boosted by Samsung’s S20 Devices

eSIM smartphone growth continues its upward trajectory, and 2020 will prove another positive year as Samsung becomes the latest OEM to boost the eSIM market. The recent launch of the Samsung S20 range of devices with eSIM support will propel global shipments of eSIM enabled smartphones to over 225 million in 2020, according to ABI Research.

Ever since Apple first announced eSIM support in its XR and S range of devices in 2018, all eyes were firmly placed on Samsung as the next OEM to support eSIM in its flagship devices. “It was always a case of when, rather than if, Samsung would support eSIM. 2020 marks a defining year and another milestone for the eSIM market. Having the largest smartphone OEM onboard, shipping over 200 million devices annually is a significant market step. Industry experts will now be closely monitoring Samsung and how it might start expanding eSIM support to other device ranges, including its Note and A ranges,” explains Phil Sealy, Digital Security Research Director.

Fleet Management Initiatives in 2020

Food Logistics

In 2020, fleet managers will take a measured approach to investments, allowing them to respond to an uncertain economic environment. And, it’s the uncertainty that’s prompting many fleet managers to consider longer term investments in technologies designed to improve fleet performance, regardless of what type of economic and competitive environment fleet operators find themselves in.

In fact, over 60% of fleet operators plan to increase their investments in technology over the next year, with goals such as tracking drivers, vehicles, cargo and other assets in near real-time, according to Susan Beardslee, principal analyst for freight transportation and logistics for ABI Research, Oyster Bay, N.Y.

How Virtual Reality is Changing the Live Music Experience

CNN

Just because your favorite band's live show sold out in minutes, it doesn't mean you have to miss out. In the last few years, musicians have been able to stream concerts to virtual reality headsets, allowing fans to enjoy the virtual spectacle from the comfort of their homes. Now some VR platforms are going beyond just recreating the live experience, by offering viewpoints and interactions that users could never get if they were at the venue.

One challenge for companies streaming concerts is that the market for dedicated VR headsets remains relatively small. Tech market researcher ABI Research predicts the VR market will surpass $24.5 billion in revenues by 2024, while acknowledging that "VR has yet to live up to its early expectations."
