Basic Telematics Services - Not Connected Infotainment Services - Drive Embedded Connectivity in 73% of Vehicles Shipped in 2027

Despite disappointing consumer uptake of infotainment-related connected services, the demand for vehicle connectivity remains strong in all regions. ABI Research finds that 70 million, over 73%, of new vehicles shipped globally in 2027 will have embedded connectivity. However, only 43% of these vehicles will have an active infotainment subscription.

"Embedded vehicle connectivity adoption is increasing consistently and is meant to become ubiquitous among new vehicles in key markets within this decade,” says Maite Bezerra, Smart Mobility & Automotive Research Analyst. “Still, most active connections today are of essential telematics services only. Connected infotainment services struggle to gain traction, with subscription churn rates reaching 90% in mass-market models after the free trial period."

Semiconductor Chip Shortages Continue to Vex the Commercial Transportation Industry with Lead Times Exceeding 5 Months

Industry suppliers from truck and trailer OEMs to commercial telematics providers continue to feel the pain of delayed semiconductor shipments alongside rising growth opportunities.  According to ABI Research, order boards will soon extend to 2022, indicating that the commercial transportation industry is facing significant semiconductor shortages through to at least the end of 2021. Telematics service providers must also confront demand stemming from 3G sunsets and the Canadian ELD Mandate. The equipment manufacturers are becoming limited in meeting all demand within 2021.

TSMC, the world’s largest chip contractor expects strong demand and potential shortages going into 2022, with Intel anticipating an industry squeeze for up to two years. “Connectivity, security, and integration are key elements of commercial transport today. Upwards of 17 compute modules are needed for a heavy-duty vehicle and everything from safety systems to engine control and telematics are impacted by these semiconductor delays,” explains Susan Beardslee, Principal Analyst, Supply Chain Management and Logistics.
