The automotive Telematics Control Unit (TCU) is a critical and quickly evolving piece of hardware in the vehicle, undergoing transitions to improved connectivity technologies, such as Wi-Fi 6, 5G, or satellite connectivity, to support automaker ambitions for progress toward a Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV) with monetized connectivity services. ABI Research's recent report highlights the expected surgence for Wi-Fi 6 connectivity for TCUs, overtaking Wi-Fi 5 in 2026 and accounting for 78% of total TCU shipments annually by 2034. The next generation of Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi 7, will begin to be used for vehicle TCUs in 2028 and be used in 22 million vehicles shipped by the forecast's end.
