Amazon, Microsoft, and Google dominate the hyperscale data center market

Hyperscale data center sites are on the rise worldwide as enterprises increasingly require significant cloud resources for data-intensive applications. The companies that have built the most hyperscale data centers include Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). This chart forecasts the number of hyperscale data center sites expected to be in operation through 2035.

According to ABI Research's 1Q 2026 market forecasts, the number of hyperscale data centers will increase from 3,207 in 2026 to 3,558 by 2035.  The construction growth rate in North America will be modest as hyperscalers already have significant footprints in the region, with greater focus shifting to adding new IT capacity for AI/HPC workloads. Asia-Pacific will experience a faster growth rate than both North America and Europe through the forecast as hyperscalers continue to invest billions in new projects across Southeast Asia and add capacity in developed countries. Europe is the only region that will see a decrease in the number of hyperscale data centers in operation (from 1,037 sites to 900 sites). This may indicate that operators on the continent are consolidating cloud computing capacity into a smaller number of larger facilities.
