The planned evolution of Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, guided by the NFC Forum, has wide-ranging ramifications on potential applications, NFC usage rates, and consumer satisfaction with NFC-based transactions. A key strength of NFC for developing secure use cases is that the market is already extremely well seeded. Most consumers in the developed world, and many in the developing world, have access to a smartphone, and an increasing majority of smartphones are NFC-equipped. There is no need to issue costly and logistically complex additional physical tokens, or force users to install unfamiliar proprietary software.
