Many interviewees refer to the space as the “Wild West” of automation, with no immediate consolidation in sight. Market revenue for outdoor applications, such as agriculture, last-mile delivery, oil & gas, mining, and ports, will increase from US$9.2 billion in 2024 to nearly US$30 billion by 2030.
A major pain point for the mobile robot market is interoperability. Initiatives such as the communication protocol VDA 5050 and Mass Robotics Interoperability Standard would allow telemetry data to be shared between robot brands, expediting Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR) deployments, and enabling mixed device fleet management. However, mobile robot vendors are reluctant to embrace the standard due to the potential for reduction in market share. AWS’s RoboRunner has been discontinued, but interoperability vendors (including Kinexon) may have a greater impact in growing large mixed fleets.
