  • Sustainability officers

ABI Research's most updated Smart Buildings Metadata takes a regional analysis on the number of factories globally. Asia-Pacific has the most factories by region, given its mature manufacturing sector. With 2.69 million factories, Asia-Pacific only narrowly beats out Europe's 2.6 million factories. These two regions account for 70% of factory stock.

North America lags in third, with 975,000 factories.

Interestingly, the total number of factories worldwide will decrease through 2030, growing at a CAGR of -0.2%. Key factors include the closure of small facilities, digital transformation/automation, and sustainability initiatives. Another driving force is the preference for larger factories, with the global built area increasing by 0.8% by 2030, reaching 2.7 billion Square Meters.

The Middle East & Africa is the only region expected to experience an increase in the number factories it has.

China (1.1 million), Mexico (595,987), Japan (484,754), France (420,678), and Germany (378,797) have the most factories by country.
