Vodacom Puts mMIMO on Two Bands in One Antenna, but Performance Remains Unproven

By Sam Bowling | 03 Nov 2026 | IN-8340

Vodacom South Africa has introduced a trial of the Nokia passive-active integrated antenna, which enables the deployment of Massive Multiple Input, Multiple Output (mMIMO) technology within both the 2.6 Gigahertz (GHz) and the 3.5 GHz frequency bands. The development was revealed on September 29, 2026 and represents another step in the evolution of the technology already introduced in 2021. This innovation's importance stems from the specific problem it solves—a limited ability to increase capacity at a site due to spatial and structural limitations despite availability of spectrum and radio capacity. So far, Vodacom has not disclosed any numerical results of its performance, making its commercial viability unverified. Value is likely to concentrate at a subset of highly constrained sites, which makes site-level benchmarking a more meaningful test than headline band counts.
