The industrial automation industry has been battered by announcements of soft and virtual controllers, aiming to provide greater interoperability and altering how control systems are designed. Siemens, Honeywell Technologies, and ABB have all taken steps to meet the Software-Defined Automation (SDA) moment. Meanwhile, notable exceptions Mitsubishi Electric and Rockwell Automation are shying away from virtualization, while SDA-centric challengers Schneider Electric, Beckhoff, and CODESYS are reimagining control from their own perspectives.
