The SpaceX Femtocell Announcement Is Not What It Seems

SpaceX plans to add small cells to its Starlink terminals, which solves key small-cell deployment hurdles like power, backhaul, and cost through existing terminal locations and vertical integration. But this comes with a major limitation: femtocell placement depends on where Starlink users are, not where mobile networks actually need coverage. Even if all 3.8 million U.S. Starlink terminals had small cells, theoretical coverage would reach only about 0.05% of U.S. land mass and 1.8% of urban land mass. ABI Research concludes that SpaceX is likely not trying to compete directly with telcos, but instead using the announcement to create leverage for broader roaming partnerships or another strategic objective.
