NEWSABB's Big Bet on Valves |
ABB has tendered a US$5.5 billion cash acquisition offer for Rotork, which specializes in industrial valves and actuators for process control. Bringing Rotork further vertically integrates ABB’s stack of process control solutions, complementing its current actuator offering. The acquisition will also enhance the edge/physical Artificial Intelligence (AI) angle of ABB, with Rotork carrying an intelligent electric actuator with on-board predictive analytics. If ABB is looking to capture its pound of flesh in the intelligent edge device share of AI, it is now in stiff competition with Valmet, a company that has made its push for AI-enabled valves with its Neles series.
IMPACTIntelligent Valves and Actuators: The Next Physical AI Play |
ABB has been pushing for AI systems like its typical Distributed Control System (DCS) peers of Emerson Electric, Honeywell Technologies, and Schneider Electric. ABB and Schneider Electric both announced agentic systems with Microsoft Azure at Hannover Messe. Meanwhile, edge devices have come into the horizon as the next frontier of industrial AI as comfort for control engineering grows. Rotork’s IQ actuator lends itself to this, both advancing the predictive capabilities of Ability Genix—ABB’s AI and analytics platform—and laying the groundwork for ABB edge AI.
Edge AI here could advance away from traditional Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) loops, toward self-learning control technology. While Advanced Process Control (APC) laid the groundwork, implementing Machine Learning (ML) techniques that have already been built with Genix will enable ABB to set itself up for the introduction of Intelligent Process Control—AI-enabled APC.
RECOMMENDATIONSCapturing Value Above and Below DCS in a Competitive Environment |
For ABB, filling in this gap is a useful step in an industrial automation ecosystem that is trending toward solution selling. At the same time, ABB is taking on an open automation architecture, adopting NAMUR OA for its new automation extended architecture, which is driving the evolution of its DCS and control solutions. In this light, acquisitions at the edge device level are an indication of where value will begin to accrue in a software-defined era, away from control and toward best-in-class solutions and devices.
On the other end of the spectrum, Schneider Electric’s offer to acquire Cognite (see ABI Insight “Schneider Electric’s US$3.1 Billion Cognite Acquisition to Challenge Incumbents’ Industrial Data Analytics and AI Insights Leadership”) takes the next step up the automation pyramid, enhanced AI, and analytics portfolios for manufacturers. ABB’s bid is extending into this domain as well, with the previously mentioned intelligent actuators taking on data cleaning at the edge for advanced analytics, reducing the contextual loss as it moves into Genix.
