European telcos such as Telefónica, Deutsche Telekom, Orange, TIM, and Vodafone are repositioning edge and central office assets as Artificial Intelligence (AI) infrastructure through initiatives like the European Edge Continuum. ABI Research sees four telco AI strategies: remain connectivity providers, become AI landlords, deploy AI infrastructure, or evolve into full AI application enablers. The opportunity is promising, but telcos still face major hurdles around business case validation, timing of Physical AI demand, and upgrading sites for power and cooling.
