Network Slicing Moves from Promise to Product, but the Reality Is Narrower than the Hype

Network slicing has long been hyped as one of the major monetization opportunities for 5G networks. The numerous recent operator announcements now suggest that network slicing is beginning to be commercially deployed, but also, the reality of the market is much smaller than the hype. Instead of transforming connection economics on a large scale, network slicing appears to be a premium service with only a few very high-value enterprise and mission-critical customers for whom guaranteed performance is worth the added complexity and cost.
