NEWSPTC Comes to Hannover Messe |
Hannover Messe 2026 starts April 20 and, for the second time in 2 years, manufacturing software provider PTC aims to have a large presence at the event. The company will lead nine thought leadership sessions over 4 days, have interactive case study demos, and provide a full networking reception that gives select attendees a chance to talk with PTC leadership. It will also, once again, occupy Hall 17 at the event, alongside other industrial software and industrial supply & engineering solutions providers.
On the face of it, this presence is expected and hardly newsworthy. Siemens, for instance, has attended Hannover Messe since its inception in 1947. Given PTC’s past, however, this engagement with Hannover Messe marks a sign of its new era, one that has brought PTC to manufacturing clients—rather than forcing manufacturing clients to PTC. The focus of its presence, however, highlights another issue: PTC is perhaps no longer the innovative force it once was.
IMPACTPTC Stresses Intelligent Product Lifecycle & AI |
PTC’s showcase at Hannover Messe 2026 breaks down into two key technologies, the first being the intelligent product lifecycle. U.S.-based agriculture & construction equipment manufacturer, Bobcat Company, will be on display as PTC’s primary case study, showcasing the power of its intelligent product lifecycle solution. The demo highlights four of PTC’s products—Creo, Windchill, Codebeamer, and ServiceMax—each representing one aspect of the company’s core tech platform (Computer-Aided Design (CAD), Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), Application Lifecycle Management (ALM), and Service Lifecycle Management (SLM)).
The other key focus for PTC at Hannover Messe is Artificial Intelligence (AI). Over the past several years, the company has opted for a practical approach to AI, stressing a solutions-first mentality. If intelligent product lifecycle is the solution, then AI is the power behind it. PTC wants its customers to connect every stage of their product journey through a shared data foundation. In the past, PTC has branded such efforts as “digital thread.” Now, the focus is on a shared asset intelligence layer (through AI) that will enable adaptive, cross-domain capabilities that were prohibitive with traditional automation technologies.
RECOMMENDATIONSInnovator or Practicality Pusher? |
PTC is bringing a solid case study to Hannover Messe, but it is basically the same one the company shared at CES back in January. At that event, Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. was the highlighted company. Once again, Windchill, Codebeamer, Creo, and ServiceMax were the primary products supporting the demonstration. The messaging was the same: focus on the product data foundation in order to reap the benefits of a faster, smarter manufacturing operation.
This messaging represents a narrowing of PTC’s software portfolio and vision. In 2024, former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jim Heppelmann departed the company and former ServiceMax CEO Neil Barua took charge. Within 12 months of that move, the company had significantly reduced emphasis on certain products—namely its Augmented Reality (AR) solution, Vuforia, and its two Internet of Things (IoT) offerings, ThingWorx and Kepware. The latter two companies were recently sold to TPG, helping to form the foundation of industry newcomer Velotic. No recent announcements have been made regarding Vuforia.
Gone too is LiveWorx, PTC’s flagship industry event, replaced with a broader focus on attending other events to spread the company’s message. While there are certainly benefits to this approach (PTC is now visible in front of far more industry players than before), it is difficult to argue that long-term vision has been reduced. LiveWorx routinely highlighted not just PTC’s ambitions for the year, but the broader direction of the company as a whole, including innovative technology investments and first-of-their kind solution demonstrations.
By focusing on its core four technologies, the new PTC has emerged as a practical, solution-first organization, but one that has lost luster. It is far from the only manufacturing software company offering an intelligent product lifecycle solution and, according to its own advanced press, will have little to say on hot topic areas like Physical AI, robotics, energy transition, and future production methods (such as the industrial metaverse or Industrial IoT (IIoT)).
This is not to rule out future innovation, however, as its recent celebration of the successful Artemis II mission (which used PTC’s digital engineering software) still keeps the company’s name in the conversation for pushing the boundaries of what is possible. The future will tell if headline-capturing missions like Artemis II are still to be the norm as part of PTC’s industry image, or if the company will try to differentiate itself as a practicality-first digital transformation provider in the age of AI.
