NEWSApple Delays Launch of Smart Home Display Again |
Initially scheduled for a spring 2025 launch, the latest industry reports indicate that Apple has further pushed back the expected release date of its newest smart home display to late 2026. This postponement is rumored to be a result of delays in the company’s development of the latest Siri update, which would power a range of Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications on the device, such as facial recognition systems and personalized notifications. The delay in the release of the latest Siri software is also expected to impact other new product releases—including the new Apple Television set-top boxes, pendants, AirPods, and smart glasses—thereby underscoring the overall importance of AI to Apple’s product strategy.
IMPACTIntelligence Is Fundamental for the Smart Home Experience |
Given the existing state of the market, it becomes evident why Apple is anxious to update its Siri capabilities before launching new products. Most of its immediate competitors, such as Google, Amazon, Xiaomi, Samsung, and LG, have already brought to market their advanced AI assistants, which places pressure on Apple to keep up.
- Google: As covered in an earlier ABI Insight (“AI for Smart Homes: Google’s Gemini for Home Announcement Reflects Wider Industry Optimism for AI”), Google replaced its existing Google Assistant platform in August 2025 with the more powerful AI assistant, Gemini for Home, in its smart displays and speakers to support the processing of more difficult commands and to provide advanced home assistance—some examples provided include understanding the existing ingredients in your fridge and providing recipe ideas. In March 2026, the company announced planned updates for Gemini for Home, adding features such as Live Search, improving voice command interactions, and adding location context for better AI responses.
- Amazon: In early-2025, Amazon released its latest AI home assistant, Alexa+, that is able to provide greater personalized responses and home support. In January this year, Amazon expanded the capabilities of its smart home assistant to the browser via Alexa.com. This provides users with flexibility to access Alexa+ capabilities via their preferred choice of device, whether it is via smart speakers, smartphones, or laptops.
- Xiaomi: In early-2025, Xiaomi launched its new Super Xiao Ai smart home assistant that is integrated into its smart speakers product lineup. Some impressive features of the AI assistant include supporting multiple commands via a single sentence, voice-activated automations, and a sophisticated multi-turn dialogue system.
- Samsung: In 2025, the company unveiled its vision for the smart home, which involves the intelligent control and automation of Samsung smart appliances through its Bixby voice assistant. Key use cases for the Samsung AI ecosystem include Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) via Bixby, meal preparation support via its refrigerators, power saving and energy efficiency, remote appliance control, and home safety monitoring.
- LG: At CES 2026, LG showcased its latest smart home robot, LG CLOiD, that is designed to complete a variety of manual housekeeping work. The robot can connect with other smart home appliances in the LG device ecosystem via its LG ThinQ platform, and is reportedly able to complete tasks such as loading the washing machine, folding clothes, and assisting with cooking.
RECOMMENDATIONSBuilding Intelligence That Matters |
The true challenge with integrating AI in the smart home is not solely about the performance of the Large Language Model (LLM), although a robust LLM will be able to support advanced commands, but it is about helping end users envision how automation and AI applications can transform daily lives. Beyond basic AI capabilities, such as general conversation AI and querying, smart home vendors will need to unlock the true value of AI where a mesh of smart home devices exchange and process data (either locally or in the cloud) to deliver unique value.
Some of these use cases can include: 1) increased home safety where cameras and sensors can work together to detect falls and automatically trigger emergency responses for the home; 2) increased convenience where cameras can trigger smart vacuum cleaners to clean up specific areas where dirt is detected; and/or 3) reduced energy consumption where cameras and sensors can exchange data to power up or down smart appliances depending on the room’s occupancy.
To achieve some of the examples mentioned above, it is critical that smart home vendors:
- Ensure interoperability with various smart home ecosystems and devices. Building compliance with the Matter protocol is a critical component in ensuring this.
- Ensure that intelligence can be seamlessly deployed in a mode that consumers are most comfortable with. This includes offering flexible on-premises and cloud data storage options, while also providing user-friendly Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) that enable end users to build their own automations easily.
- Developing and communicating their vision of the “smart home” to consumers. If vendors are unable to envision what the future smart home will look like, it will be a challenge convincing end users to adopt the technology.
