Interconnect Innovation: NVLink, UALink, and the Race to Scale AI

By Dimitris Mavrakis | 09 Jan 2026 | IN-8020

Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) performance is increasingly defined by interconnect speed rather than raw compute power. NVIDIA leads this space with NVLink, NVSwitch, and NVLink Fusion, enabling scale-up and scale-out connectivity for massive Artificial Intelligence (AI) clusters. UALink emerged as an open alternative, but delays and uncertain adoption threaten its relevance. Meanwhile, Serializer/Deserializer (SerDes) and physical layer innovations—spanning copper and optical—are becoming critical battlegrounds and UALink may be too late to the market.
