AT&T-EchoStar Deal: Bad for Open RAN Ecosystem, but Good for FWA

AT&T’s US$23 billion spectrum purchase from EchoStar is set to accelerate its Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) strategy, but undermines U.S. Open Radio Access Network (RAN) momentum by consolidating market share under Ericsson. As part of the deal, EchoStar will decommission its own RAN sites and transition to a hybrid Mobile Network Operator (MNO) model using AT&T’s infrastructure, marking a strategic retreat from its multi-vendor Open RAN deployment.
