Juniper Networks has been ranked at the top of a new Unified Threat Management (UTM) Vendor Matrix released by ABI Research, while Fortinet and Cisco Systems claimed the second and third spots, respectively.

The Vendor Matrix is an analytical tool developed by ABI Research to provide a clear understanding of vendors’ positions in specific markets. Vendors are assessed on the important parameters of “innovation” and “implementation” across several criteria unique to each vendor matrix.

“Juniper has consistently shown exceptional differentiation in terms of feature-set, performance and implementation flexibility in a market that is getting increasingly crowded. It continues to excel as a value differentiator,” says senior analyst Subha Rama. “Juniper is increasingly featuring in conversations where security buying decisions are being made independent of network investments, displacing strong competitors in the bargain.”

“Fortinet, ranked second, has been a disruptive force in the market with a wide range of products that cater to multiple customer segments,” adds practice director Dan Shey, “and Cisco has a strong base of customers who look to the vendor as a complete solutions provider.”

For this particular matrix, under "innovation," ABI Research examined the scope of the vendors’ UTM offerings and product innovation, and their solutions’ scalability and flexibility. Vendors were also ranked on their application and vertical market alignment and innovation, their overall strategy and vision, their industry leadership, influence and knowledge transfer, and their focus on developing/enabling new application areas.

Under "implementation," ABI Research scrutinized the following criteria: breadth and strength of vertical markets served/targeted; breadth and strength of the solutions; product integration and support capabilities; the vendors’ installed base and customer deployments; their “total solutions” quotient, partner collaboration and partner ecosystem, and their overall perceived market leadership, strength, and experience.
