Secure Microcontroller Units (MCUs) are primarily leveraged for Internet of Things (IoT) applications, with a wide range of potential use cases, reflecting the great disparity and fragmentation of IoT applications. The capabilities of higher-end MCUs are increasingly converging with those of lower-end applications processors/Microprocessor Units (MPUs). These secure MPUs primarily serve smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches (notably in Systems-on-Chip (SoCs)).
For IoT applications where a rich Operating System (OS) and software stack is needed, but real-time functionalities and latency are also a requirement, hybrid, multi-core products are emerging to meet those demands.
While the demand for hybrid MCU/MPUs is still fairly low, with a market emerging only a few years ago (~ 2019), to hit 50 million units shipped in 2024, ABI Research forecasts a robust 45% CAGR between 2024 and 2028. This will translate to 194.12 million annual shipments by the end of the forecast period.
