5G is not here yet and it will not arrive in the manufacturing markets for few years. Furthermore, once it does arrive, it will have to be tested in factory conditions to ensure that it can perform in harsh environments; the business model for 5G in the smart manufacturing world also needs to be defined, as pricing the technology beyond the delivered benefits will result in the failure of 5G and an industry looking for alternative options. MSPs (Mobile Service Providers) and network vendors need to have long-term plans in place, patience to build momentum, and experience in manufacturing. In what is a de facto new area for them, they cannot expect immediate significant revenue, which could come in the longer term. While 5G is a technology with great potential to enable multiple applications, from massive numbers of sensors to collaborative robotics, as no other wireless technology can do, MSPs and network vendors need to be aware of the challenges that lie ahead.
