The aquaculture space, like the agricultural space, is seeing huge advancements due to the implementation of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies and solutions. The Iranian fish farming industry has seen rapid growth in recent years that has had a positive effect on the region’s employment and production rates. Libelium has deployed its smart water sensors to Iran and other regions to help control the quality of the water where the fish are farmed, save labor time, and reduce fish deaths by between 30 and 40%.

Aquaculture Seeks Clarity

NEWS

The aquaculture space, like the agricultural space, is seeing huge advancements due to the implementation of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies and solutions. The Iranian fish farming industry has seen rapid growth in recent years that has had a positive effect on the region’s employment and production rates. Libelium has deployed its smart water sensors to Iran and other regions to help control the quality of the water where the fish are farmed, save labor time, and reduce fish deaths by between 30 and 40%.

Current Aquaculture Solutions

IMPACT

Several different varieties of solutions are available to resolve problems that fish farmers may have.

Libelium has started to deploy water sensors that test the quality of the water, including dissolved oxygen and pH levels. This solution collectively improves the productivity of the farms while reducing costs. Libelium also offers solutions for fish farming in Vietnam. Its Waspmote Plug and Sense! sensor platform offers real-time monitoring of several parameters to control water quality and prevent some of the diseases that could be present in the farms.

Sense-T also offers a variety of solutions for a variety of different products produced by the fish farming market. Their sensors provide real-time data on fish behavior, water temperature, dissolved oxygen, and depth. Sense-T is also developing oyster biosensors that will make the oyster market more efficient and sustainable.

Sensorex sensors have been deployed to a pioneering smart village in India to monitor similar aspects of the environment that Libelium’s solutions measure in shrimp farms. Sensorex’s solution allows shrimp farmers to understand the environment in which their shrimp are growing and know when an unhealthy environment is forming.

eFishery is yet another vendor that offers a solution. Rather than focusing on the quality of the water in which the fish are breeding, though, eFishery focuses on the automatization of the feed process. Its solution offers to feed the fish automatically throughout the day and can also be modified remotely by an application on a mobile device.

This Market Will Grow Swimmingly

RECOMMENDATIONS

Aquaculture is considered one of the more niche markets available for IoT solutions in the overall agricultural space. Though it is niche, aquaculture offers an opportunity for vendors to enter into successful partnerships, such as the one between Sensorex and AppScape. Together, they provide the hardware and software for shrimp farmers to monitor their livestock in real time. The use of the software supplied by AppScape allows for the hardware and other controlling agents to be remotely controlled by an app, allowing for more efficient use of the farmers’ time and resources.

Vendors who can leverage existing ecosystem partnerships and solution components should consider entering the aquaculture market due to its long-term growth opportunities. The market has substantial opportunities for high growth in specific regions, like the Asia-Pacific region, for example, due to its fish farming culture and the vast number of fish farms available to the market there.

There are a wide variety of solutions available for this market due to end-user demand, which is one of the key reasons why it will create success for vendors. The aforementioned solutions give fish farmers the ability to solve any problem they may have in the farms, which is why vendors are being urged to join the wave hitting the aquaculture space.
