AR in Telemedicine, Training and First Responder Medical Applications

4Q 2016 | Application Analysis Report | AN-2360 | 24 pages | 8 tables | 1 chart | 2 figures | PDF

Augmented reality with smart glasses head mounted devices (HMDs) sputtered in the consumer market, but the technology has taken root in the commercial space and is expected to begin flourishing in the coming years. Trials are currently underway in many professional markets, and some early adopters have already moved to deployment stages. The medical field, which is the focus of this report, likewise has seen its share of interest and excitement but this facet of the augmented reality market will take longer to develop.

Early traction has started with first responders who use HMDs in see what I see applications and while early trials conducted by physicians/surgeons and even more concepts have been put forth it will take time before augmented reality becomes a pivotal tool. Education and training have also seen some early traction and interest, but high prices (HMDs) and limited installed base still keep these applications on the periphery. The medical market will start to gain momentum however as more medical professionals look to new technologies and tools to improve the level of care and outcomes for their patients–regulatory activity is also pushing the medical field to focus on long-term outcomes and limiting costs where possible, both of which can serve as drivers for AR.

This report analyzes the market potential for AR (use of HMDs) in key segments of the medical market (e.g. Telemedicine, Training, Office). Forecasts for medical HMDs (hardware and software revenue) are provided by region (North America, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, Middle East & Africa) and out to 2021.
