Many of the challenges with deploying and scaling the IoT will be addressed using embedded systems and Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS), which are ideal for supporting connectivity functions, especially wireless. There are numerous commercial, open-source, and proprietary RTOSes available on the market with varying instruction set architectures, libraries, and compilers. They address various verticals, from consumer to industrial. This report analyzes RTOSes in an effort to provide an overview of the systems used in the IoT, the respective ecosystem and the developers, as well as market forecasts in terms of technology and application.
