The concept of smart home is emerging with the promise of convenience, comfort, safety, and energy efficiency to enhance the occupant’s quality of life through the provision of services such as telehealth, entertainment, energy conservation, video surveillance, and home security. The varied requirements of different smart home applications have resulted in the use of multiple wireless technologies in a residential home. The technologies used in the smart home environment that are witnessing significant traction in the market are Wi-Fi, Z-Wave, IEEE 802.15.4-based protocols like ZigBee, and Bluetooth smart and proprietary sub-GHz technologies. The key attributes of the wireless connectivity technologies that would drive deployment of smart home systems can be broadly classified into the following: security, power consumption, coverage or range, cost, and data bandwidth. While these attributes are relevant across different applications, the requirements across those different applications can vary considerably.
