On October 16, 2014, Apple launched the new iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 at its Cupertino, California, headquarters. While the announcements were not groundbreaking, one new feature is a bold step in MNO waters for Apple. The iPads will be shipped with a preinstalled nano SIM card, which will allow the end user to choose from a number of various short-term data plans. Four MNOs are currently onboard: in the United States, Apple has partnered with AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile, while in the United Kingdom, it has made a deal with EE. Apple’s idea is to simplify the experience for the user in terms of finding and choosing an appropriate data plan for the iPad.
