For months there have been active negotiations between the major players in the Brazilian telecommunication industry. America Movil and Telefonica were planning to acquire TIM from Telecom Italia before Oi joined in the talk. Before long, a dramatic turn took place, leading to a potential acquisition of Oi by TIM and America Movil.

Consolidation Cloud Looms over the Brazilian Sky


In September, Telefonica, the largest operator in Brazil, acquired GVT, a local fixed broadband company owned by France’s Vivendi. This was followed by active rounds of talks on M&A deals between the top four telecommunication providers: Telefonica, America Movil, TIM, and Oi. Out of the four operators, only Oi is based in Brazil and solely operates in the Brazilian market.
