Weinstein Company and Netflix Partner on Simultaneous Theatrical and Streaming Release
Netflix announced it is planning to stream the sequel to "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" on the same day as movie theaters (release scheduled for August 2015). The movie "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend" marks a potentially seismic change in how studios monetize their content. While content exclusivity is not new (Amazon, for instance, has locked in several exclusive streaming deals (e.g., select CBS series)), it is the first expected blockbuster movie (with relatively wide distribution) to attempt to do so on the same day as the opening. Even past TV series deals have meant content posting online/streaming a day or more after the original airing.
