SK Telecom Acquired Shopkick


It was announced in September 2014 that Shopkick had been acquired by SK Telecom for approximately US$200 million. Despite being a relatively weak location technology by today’s standards, Shopkick has blazed a trail in the United States with over 8,000 stores and 8 million users, by far and away the most successful application to date, using an over-the-top points/rewards program. Despite this, many felt it was a success because it was first, not because it was best, and would soon struggle as its rewards program was funded by the brands/retailers. The question was why would they choose to use a third party when they could just do it themselves?
