Continued Proliferation of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) Attacks


Distributed denial-of-service, or DDoS, attacks are on the rise, and gaining in size, frequency, and complexity. Most recently, Sony PlayStation network was rendered offline by a DDoS attack. Another DDoS attack targeting a client of the content delivery network Cloudflare exceeded 400 gigabits per second. News aggregator Feedly and note-taking service Evernote were both knocked offline by DDoS attacks. The key objective of a typical DDoS attack is not to steal or expose confidential data but rather to prevent legitimate users from accessing information or services by overloading a website with phony traffic until it breaks.
