Data Breaches Are Inevitable


In September 2014, leading American home improvement retailer The Home Depot confirmed that its payment data systems were breached at nearly 2,200 U.S. and Canadian stores. This is just one of the many such happenings in the recent past. In August 2014, United Parcel Service (UPS) confirmed that its customer information was compromised. In January 2014, retail giant Target disclosed that payment card information of at least 40 million customers were stolen, resulting in the resignation of its CEO and losses close to US$1 billion. The Heartbleed encryption bug affected a large number of companies including Amazon, Yahoo, Pinterest, Tumblr, and WordPress. In yet another breach discovered by Hold Security, a Russian gang reportedly stole 1.2 billion user names and passwords and more than 500 million email addresses. Neiman Marcus, JP Morgan, Coco-Cola, Healthcare.gov, AIG’s Variable Annuity Life Insurance Company, and eBay also suffered recent cyberattacks. These data br...
