Are RF Power Design Skills Slipping Away?

In the wide universe represented by the overall electronics industry, RF power represents a tiny but important slice. The portions of the electronics business that need high-power RF equipment and components include defense, radio/TV broadcast, space communications, industrial heating for manufacturing, commercial air traffic control systems, public safety systems, and medical electronics to name just a few. If one backs away from the obvious hardware part of the equation, it now appears that the critical design skills necessary to build new hardware and integrate systems may be slipping away. What will this mean for the industry as a whole if it comes up short on design capability?
