Online video platforms (OVP), managed video platforms (MVP), and content delivery networks (CDN) are all part of media and entertainment companies' strategies to deliver videos as part of TV Everywhere and over-the-top (OTT) video services. This product tracks the growth of video platforms used to deliver video to any screen over IP, including PC's, tablets, smartphones, connected TVs, game consoles, and smart set-top boxes. ABI Research also provides some context around two emerging business models: those of live video streaming platforms (LVSP)—which are the live equivalent of the OVP—and Turnkey or White Label OTT solutions.
CDNs generally are responsible for finding optimal routes for the video, and storing copies close to consumers to ensure a high quality of delivery. Akamai, a well-known CDN with global presence, continues to hold a commanding lead of the video delivery market, with other CDNs trailing behind. The continued growth of cloud video delivery creates a promising market for CDNs going forward, where video storage and delivery is a primary concern. Video over mobile networks will also be an area of interest and potential disruption in the market. The OVP market sees a split between Piksel, thePlatform, Brightcove, and Ooyala; Piksel's expansion into content acquisition brings them in line with competitors for market share. The MVP space continues to slow in growth thanks to a growing demand for more modular offerings, with Synacor, QuickPlay, and Neulion leading with similar market share.
