“Outside In” for 5G Waveforms


Everything around 5G has yet to even begin formally taking shape. Companies and research organizations have been focusing on the RF side so far, with a focus on the shift to ultra-wideband channels in centimeter wave and millimeter wave frequencies and the use of spatial division techniques, massive MIMO, and full dimensional beamforming. 5G is being formed from the "outside in": from the RF side back to the baseband and then to the waveform. The waveform is the part that is most up in the air at this point. There are different options, but one is increasingly being mentioned.
