Samsung Acquires Smart Home Start-up Firm SmartThings


After weeks of speculation, Samsung announced its acquisition of smart home start-up SmartThings for an estimated US$200 million. Samsung's acquisition of SmartThings signals its push into the smart home market, where Samsung already has a presence in audio/video devices, home appliances, lighting, HVAC, surveillance cameras, and smart mobile devices. SmartThings started after its successful Kickstarter campaign in September 2012, when it raised over US$1 million.
