LTE Broadcast Gains Attention, and According to Some, Should Make the FBI’s Most Unwanted List


July 2014 was a busy month for LTE Broadcast vendors with announcements of trials, demos, and operator interest. LTE Broadcast is defined in the 3GPP LTE standards as evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (eMBMS). LTE Broadcast may be a curiosity to some, but the teeming throngs of naysayers, who I will refer to collectively as the antagonistic Cigarette-Smoking Man* (CSM), question the technology as having no viable business model, as in “been there, done that,” and “nothing new so move along.” But while they appreciate the technical sophistication, the CSM, and those who follow, will fail to look beyond the immediate use case of “what is now” and miss the “what might be” opportunities.
