Truck OEMs, Governments, and Defense Organizations Exploring Autonomous Driving Technology


While autonomous passenger vehicles are in the limelight on a daily basis, self-driving trucks are also actively being explored and tested by governments, technology suppliers, truck OEMs, and the military:

  • EU SARTE / Volvo AB: The European Union’s Safe Road Trains for the Environment (SARTRE) project came to an end in 2012, successfully demonstrating vehicle road trains/platooned traffic on highways, with vehicles automatically maintaining a 4-meter gap at speeds of up to 90 kilometers/hour. Its main partner, Volvo Car Corporation, provided a manually-driven lead truck, followed by one truck and three Volvo cars (S60, V60, and XC60).
  • EU COMPANION Research Project: This project has a budget of EUR€5.4 million of which EUR€3.4 million is funded by the EU’s Seventh Framework Programme. It is to culminate in truck platooning trials...
