In late July 2014, hedge-fund group Elliott Management took a 2% stake in EMC and immediately recommended VMware be sold or spun-off. If it were to be sold, Elliott Management would look for a strategic buyer of the US$40 billion company, which specializes in datacenter servers and other hardware. According to The Wall Street Journal, likely suitors include Oracle, Cisco Systems, and Hewlett-Packard. However, Microsoft also should be considered as a viable candidate to acquire VMware.
