The Electronic Logging Mandate


In March this year, a new proposal was approved in the US that requires the number of hours driven to be recorded. The mandate proposed requires the use of electronic logging devices (ELDs) within 2 years of a final ruling, in keeping with a requirement in the 2012 highway legislation known as MAP-21. However, carriers already requiring drivers to use devices meeting the current automatic on-board recording device (AOBRD) standard would be able to continue using those devices for another 2 years. This announcement means that drivers will have protection and cannot be forced to work over the legal limit and it is also good news for commercial telematics.
