Another Take on IoT Interoperability

Announced on July 15, the launch of Thread Group, a new consortium aiming to fix the increasingly discussed IoT interoperability problem, is a major development in the industry. The purpose of this initiative is to create a new, open wireless connectivity standard, dubbed Thread, that is designed ground-up for the needs of IoT devices, particularly the ones operating in a smart-home environment. As regards the consortium’s priorities, this mission seems to primarily mean that Thread will support 6LoWPAN and mesh networking, and aims to improve the state of the art in terms of power consumption and connection security. That is at least the articulated goal. Thread will not be available to its members until late 2014, with the certification program and the subsequent devices meant to follow in the course of 2015.
