Opportunities for Wireless Connectivity in Mobile Devices, Wearables, Smart Homes, and Automotive

Wireless connectivity is the lifeblood of the mobile device market. In 2013, 99% of smartphones included Wi-Fi support while 98% incorporated Bluetooth; contrast that with the 54% attach rate of Bluetooth in feature phones. The growth of wireless connectivity will also enable new opportunities for Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS/GNSS, and NFC in some of the hottest emerging markets, such as wearables and connected vehicles.

The size of the eventual product is a driving requirement for integration of wireless functions into fewer chips. All wireless connectivity protocols are forecasted to exceed 85% attach rate on smartphones shipped in 2019. The integration of wireless connectivity into different chipset types (from standalone to combo ICs to SoC platform solutions) is determined using customer inputs and adoption levels of wireless protocols.
